Migration

migration

Whimbrel have a very cosmopolitan (look that word up) lifestyle. They are passage migrants which means that they travel, usually long distances through many countries at certain times of the year.

After spending the winter in
South Africa they take off for their breeding grounds in Iceland, Scandanavia and some extreme northern areas of Britain eg Shetland islands. On their way up, they stop to feed like mad at various places in Europe along the way.

Their breeding season lasts about 3 months, after which they have another good old feed before heading back to
Africa again stopping off to refuel every so often. This enormous round trip is over 5,000 miles!!
